Is it a child or mans corset? Lovely "new" dish! Bethany, thanks for the lead! 1840s corsets/stays (see this post for more information on the history of the terms and what to call what when) are probably relatively hard to find in museum collections because the 1840s was a period of transition in styles in corsets. The style of corsets that would have been on its way out in the 1840s is based on the so-called ‘longline’ corsets of the 1810s and 20s, with a solid front busk, bust gussets, hip gussets or princess seams (well, what we would come to call princess seams) and shoulder straps. I've not done anything 1800's. All that lovely cotton. This bum pad is made from the pattern included with the 1850's dress in Simplicity 3727. Very Spode-esque :D. Lauren, thanks. I'm also using my regency shift as I think it is more accurate for the early 40's than my Civil War era chemises. If not, what is it? The stays give more of a straight, upright look to the torso and I loosened the laces holding the straps so the bust can sit a *tad* lower than it does for my regency gowns. smoking jacket. victorian groom. As long as the stains weren’t obviously mine I’d be thrilled to have my intimates on display in a museum! :) I don't feel too bad about making things I don't really need if all the materials come from my stash. straw boaters. That bum pad really makes a difference :) And your waist still looks tiny! Thanks! Somehow, they feel like they would be the right thing to wear under the “national” costume… because the Czech patriots/nationalists of 19th century were apparently not the fashion following crowd. . Thank you - I am happ... A few months ago I got a few bags of clothes from the thrift store during their annual fill-a-bag-for-$1 day. victorian clothing. Your new undergarments look fabulous, Sarah! Filed under: 19th Century. One for an invalid? Lovely "new" dish! On my wish-list of things to make this year is to complete my 1830s underthings- including revisiting my corset. I will just go as she was in Gone With the Wind. The divided front busk has yet to appear. suspenders. There is something so meditative and relaxing about it. Very inspiring! The classic hourglass shape that would characterise the ideal body shape of the later half of the 19th century is beginning to appear, and the bust-on-a-stick silhouette of Regency fashions is being left behind. This first one is most intriguing, as it looks quite professional in its make. !Maryhttp://anhistoricallady.blogspot.com, Just lovely!! Interesting how long they are given the rapid change of shape to skirts that stuck out. royal clothing . Thank you very much! Reply Delete The waist suppression for these corsets is fairly minimal, and creates a longer waist. I found it fascinating how the layers interact with each other to give the final shape, so here are probably more pictures than you want to see, but it shows how each item is necessary for the final look and how the corded petticoat REALLY helps give the right shape while eliminating all but one plain petticoat. Your undergarments look fabulous, and the shape is SO right !A clear friend has the exact same plates, I always found them stunning, great find ! Also intersting that cording seems to play a bigger part than boning, busks aside. I was able to get that knitting book from S&S sutler. For more images of 1840s corsets and undergarments, check out my pinterest pages, which are (rather unhelpfully for the purpose of this post) divided into 1820s-40s undergarments, and 1840s-60s undergarments. However, we went to Goodwill yesterday (I was looking for a slinky 30's-ish looking evening gown) and David came across these lovely dishes while I desperately tried to wiggle into a sea-foam green stretchy slinky dress with a draped front and huge rhinestone brooch. The shape is just perfect! Is it a nursing corset? I just love the look of crisp, white period undergarments. P.S. In the 19th century women's underwear was usually open between the legs but in the 20th century closed knickers replaced them. From the front, it makes perfect sense, but the back view shows that the strap tapers to a very narrow ribbon: Not very helpful for supporting the weight of a skirt!
