He converted to Catholicism, and after winning several key battles, Paris finally capitulated on March 22, 1594. Before this he was King of Navarre, in South West France. Henry IV of France's succession to the throne in 1589 was followed by a four-year war of succession to establish his legitimacy, which was part of the French Wars of Religion (1562–1598).

His parents were Queen Jeanne III and King Antoine of Navarre. Henry won victories at Arques in 1589 and Ivry in 1590 and mounted unsuccessful sieges of Paris in 1590 and of Rouen in 1591–92.
