This book took a series of unexpected turns: the mad scientist plot, the religious side story, the horror vibes turning into a modernist novel, the conflict between science and religion and then some sprinkles of academic life. However it was full of suspense and fascinating like a thriller should be. Jessica has just started a PhD at SOAS in London. Still, I would not recommend this book to anyone with children.
When I see the words "poison", "witch", "magic" and "midwife", I tend to think that the book is another by-the-numbers account of patriarchal abuse or otherwise some kind of uninteresting supernatural revenge fantasy in response to the same. This flip-flopping of personalities and traits gets rather annoying and delayed me really caring what happened to the main character. Sari's friend/fiancé must also leave and at first Sari misses him, but soon his house, the most wealthy of the village, is turned into an internment camp for captured Italian prisoners. The Angel Makers is a compelling, unforgettable read. This is a great book that addresses many ethical issues about scientific progress, while simultaneously adding religious and superstitious elements to the mix. The theme of the 'Angel-maker', the bio-engineering of human beings, elevates this story to a higher level, and gives the novel from the beginning a 'gothic' undertone (Victor Hoppe really is Frankenstein). The Angel Makers by Jessica Gregson is without a doubt the best book I have read in years, period. The story moved at a good pace and the ending was a surprise (at least for me). The atmosphere and main character of this novel somehow reminded me of "The Perfume".
Volume . ( In Sari, Gregson has created a strong, independent woman that readers will find complex and very realistic. My regrets of requesting this book began within a few chapters. I think it was good-- really good, in fact, and so disturbing that I don't think I got very much sleep last night.

I had an impression that Ms. Gregson didn’t know exactly what to do with her main character, she is described several ways a few chapters and contradicts this all the next.
