It was one of the darkest chapters in the history of Birmingham policing – a terrible tragedy that sparked outrage and retribution.One shot pierced the tot’s heart and it is likely John died inside the police car that rushed him to hospital.John’s death – a loss of life that made headlines around the world – sparked a campaign of retribution, culminating in one WPC being dragged from her car and beaten.The shockwaves that followed it swamped a family in grief and near destroyed the officer who fired the shot.PC Brian Chester, a family man and highly commended officer, was later cleared of any wrongdoing.He emerged from court to tell the waiting press: “I have been to hell and back.”The terrible chain of events that culminated in John’s death was sparked by the hunt for his father, also called John, who had been involved in a violent robbery just days before.He and two others had travelled to the small mid-Wales town of Kidwelly where they raided a restaurant for just a few hundred pounds.Following a tip-off, a team of police officers swooped on the Barratts Road home in Kings Norton of 26-year-old Mr Shorthouse, who was considered dangerous and violent.They used a ram to smash through the door, burst into rooms and rounded up what they believed was the entire family.Alongside the suspect was wife Jacqueline and two sons, two-year-old Dennis and Danny, aged four.In the drama, John, sleeping in his bed, slipped the net.Coventry-based bobby PC Chester, his mobility restricted by his bulletproof vest, entered the boy’s bedroom, unaware it was occupied.He believed the shape under the covers was a bundle of blankets.As he conducted a final search of the cramped room, sweeping his torch under the bed, he placed the hand clasping the Smith and Wesson revolver on the mattress.In a shocking second, the gun discharged as PC Chester hauled himself upright.The police operation had succeeded in capturing Mr Shorthouse, who was led away in handcuffs – One newspaper claimed news of the killing was kept from the arrested man for hours.It reported: “The father of the five-year-old boy shot dead in bed by a police marksman was held in a cell for nearly 12 hours before he was told of the tragedy, his family claimed last night.“It was also alleged that the shooting came ten minutes after John Shorthouse was arrested and taken from his house in Birmingham, which had been raided by an armed police squad.“Meanwhile, fierce pressure was mounting on the Government to set up an independent public inquiry into the killing.”Plagued by guilt, Mr Shorthouse was only too aware that it was his crime that had led officers to his family’s door: it was the spark to a timeline that ended with John Jnr’s death.Newspapers were plastered with images of the robber, shackled and flanked by prison officers, at John’s graveside.Four months after the death, the Director of Public Prosecution ruled he should be charged with manslaughter.But Mr Shorthouse was first to be brought before the courts.As his own barrister, Anthony Evans QC, put it: “This man knows that had he not been involved in this offence, his son would not have been shot and killed.At Swansea Crown Court, he was jailed for three years and six months.Accomplices Jonathan Williams, 35, of Yardley Wood, was sentenced to ten years behind bars after a trial, and Stephen Herbert, 29, of Kings Norton, to four years after he, too, was found guilty.He denied claims by the prosecution that he had panicked at seeing movement in the bed and opened fire.The 35-year-old’s account that he had difficulty bending in his bulletproof vest was more convincing to the jury.After the five-day trial, the relieved officer was cleared.After the trial, a clear picture of his professionalism and dedication during 16 years of service was outlined by the force.The father-of-three had four commendations and was a pillar of the community in the Willenhall area of Coventry.Just weeks after his trial he was cleared to resume duties.The force scrapped its practice of training rank-and-file officers for firearms duties and set up a specialist squad.The Shorthouse family will always struggle to come to terms with their loss.On an online tribute page in 2011, one relative posted: “A little thank you from John Shorthouse’s family.“Thank you all so much for your kind words towards my father.“I’m Johnny’s daughter, and wasn’t born when this happened.“Thank you all for not viewing my dad as a monster, like the press and most people like to make him out to be.John Shorthouse had been hiding under blankets when police raided his fathers home and a gun went off accidentallyWhen you subscribe we will use the information you provide to send you these newsletters.
